Turkish American Cultural Association of Florida

The Turkish American Cultural Association of Florida is a Non Profit Corporation that has been registered with the Attorney General's office of the State of Florida.

Its mission is to promote the Turkish culture within the United States. Its membership is open to anyone wanting to join and pay the yearly dues. To promote the Turkish culture TACAF board plans and participates in several activities throughout the year, including the annual folklore festival in St Petersburg, Florida, called SPIFFS. The Turkish American Cultural Association of Florida was founded in 1986. Last year TACAF had approximately 170 due paying members. A newsletter is published every six weeks informing the membership of the coming events and summaries of the events occurred. TACAF is also a member of ATAA, the Associations of Turkish American Associations headquartered in Washington, DC. Turkish Heritage and Culture

We the people

Turkey, founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923, is geographically located primarily in Anatolia (Asia Minor) and is on the cross roads between Europe and Asia. Our home land was the birth place and home of many ancient civilizations; central to many faiths, hosting/hosted Ecumenical Patriarch of Istanbul (Orthodox) and Moslem Caliphates; has two of the seven original wonders of the world; and is crowned by Istanbul, beautiful capital of Roman, Byzantium and Ottoman Empires as well as jewel of Turkish Republic.

World famous Turkish Folk dancers and belly dancers, military band (mehter) that inspired classic composers such as Beethoven and Mozart, delicious Turkish food, pastries, and Turkish coffee can be enjoyed by all everywhere, including the Tampa Bay and Orlando, where thousands of Turkish Americans enrich the culture.

Excellent Turkish cuisine, outstanding hospitality, and incomparable historic wealth, harnessed with the festivities, make Turkey a country one must visit.

Turks enjoy sports such as soccer (world cup third place in 2002), basketball (3 NBA players, Mehmet Okur was all star 2007 and Hedo Türkoğlu plays for Orlando Magic), Weightlifting (3 time Olympic winner pocket Hercules Naim Süleymanoğlu) and, National sport, wrestling. Children of all ages enjoy playing various games, but most widely spread pass time is playing Backgammon in coffee houses or at home.
